(the staff)

original, 3D printed staff created with the letterforms from my custom typeface. the staff spells out my maiden name, “sherry xu”. staffs are an integral part of the magical girl genre, so the inclusion of one in my thesis helped to bring the narrative together in a more concrete way. i designed it in illusrator then sent it over to my good friends, cubedink, who then 3D modeled and printed it. color changing filament was used in certain places to further portray a theme of transformation.

the head of the staff went on to further inspire these “magic circles” which also spelled out different famous magical girl catchphrases. these magic circles were used in different places like in the material samples, the inner lining of the cape, and some graphic elements on the posters.
